As the Head of Engineering, you will be responsible for the overall technical direction, leadership, and execution across the engineering organization. Reporting directly to the CTO, you'll oversee multiple engineering teams, growing to approximately 20 engineers before the end of the year, with plans to scale further in the next 12-18 months. This executive leadership role requires strategic vision, technical excellence, and exceptional people leadership to drive our ambitious product roadmap while building a world-class engineering culture.
You'll be a key member of the executive team, contributing to company-wide strategy and ensuring that our technical capabilities and architecture position us for sustainable growth and innovation. As they continue to revolutionize legal technology with AI-driven solutions, you'll be instrumental in shaping the technical foundation that enables our success.
Responsibilities
- Engineering Leadership: Lead and scale the entire engineering organization, including multiple teams across frontend, backend, data engineering, ML/AI, infrastructure, and security domains.
- Strategic Vision: Partner with the executive team to develop and implement the technical vision and strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives and market opportunities.
- Organizational Design: Structure the engineering organization optimally for growth, establishing effective team structures, reporting lines, and career paths.
- Technical Architecture: Oversee system-wide architectural decisions, guiding the evolution of our platform to ensure scalability, security, performance, and innovation.
- Process Optimization: Establish efficient engineering processes, methodologies, and best practices that drive quality, velocity, and operational excellence.
- Resource Planning: Develop and manage engineering budgets, headcount planning, and resource allocation across teams and initiatives.
- Executive Collaboration: Work closely with the CTO, CPO, CEO, and other executives to drive cohesive, mission-aligned strategies that deliver exceptional value to our customers.
- Talent Development: Build and nurture a diverse, high-performing engineering team through strategic hiring, mentorship, and career development programs.
- Product Delivery: Ensure consistent, high-quality delivery of our product roadmap, balancing innovation with stability and technical debt management.
- Technical Excellence: Champion engineering excellence, fostering a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and technical best practices.
Technical Proficiency
You should have senior-level expertise in several of the following areas:
- Platform Architecture: Deep experience architecting and scaling cloud-native, distributed systems that handle significant user loads and complex workflows.
- AI/ML Integration: Knowledge of integrating machine learning and AI capabilities into production applications at scale.
- Cloud Infrastructure: Expert-level understanding of AWS, GCP, or Azure, with experience managing large-scale cloud operations and optimizing for cost and performance.
- Security & Compliance: Strong background in implementing security best practices and compliance frameworks in regulated industries.
- Data Engineering: Experience with data pipelines, analytics infrastructure, and leveraging data effectively throughout the organization.
- Modern Development Practices: Mastery of DevOps, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and other modern software development methodologies.
- Technology Stack Depth: Hands-on background with multiple programming languages and frameworks, with particular strength in Python, Go, or Node.js.
Requirements
- 12+ years in software engineering, with at least 5+ years in engineering leadership roles, including direct management of engineering managers.
- Track record of growing and leading engineering organizations of 15-20 engineers across multiple teams and disciplines.
- Proven ability to translate business strategy into technical roadmaps and architectural decisions.
- Demonstrated success in delivering complex, mission-critical software products in fast-paced environments.
- Experience building diverse, high-performing engineering teams and fostering a culture of technical excellence.
- History of effective partnership with product, design, sales, marketing, and other business functions.
- Exceptional ability to communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience leading technical transformation and modernization initiatives.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
- Fluency in both English and Spanish is required.
- Ability to work as part of an international, distributed team and resolve potential issues and challenges that come with remote work.
