Lead WordPress Engineer – Project Technical Owner

We are looking for a senior WordPress engineer who can take full technical ownership of complex website rebuilds, from kickoff to go-live. This role is not about managing people. It is about leading projects technically.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership from Day One

• Participate in project kickoff.
• Conduct technical audits of existing websites.
• Analyze legacy architecture and identify risks.
• Create URL migration spreadsheets (keep / modify / migrate / redirect).
• Validate whether proposal scope aligns with actual technical effort.
• Escalate when estimates or scope are misaligned.

Architecture & Solution Design

• Define scalable architecture on project level using internal platform.
• Design content models (CPTs, taxonomies, metadata).
• Handle complex rebuild strategies (e.g., old styleguide + new styleguide coexisting).
• Ensure multilingual compatibility when needed.
• Design custom solutions when requirements are non-standard.
• Write complex project-specific implementations when required.

Scope & Budget Awareness

• Review requirements and challenge unrealistic expectations.
• Work with PMs to prevent out-of-scope delivery.
• Ensure technical solutions align with internal budgets.
• Flag risks early — technical, timeline, or financial.
• Provide pragmatic solutions that balance quality and constraints.

Delivery Ownership

• Guide developers working on the project.
• Review code and maintain quality standards.
• Ensure implementation follows architectural intent.
• Troubleshoot production issues under tight deadlines when needed.
• Drive the project toward a stable go-live.

Design & Cross-Team Collaboration

• Review designs early and flag technical risks.
• Communicate feasibility clearly to PMs and stakeholders.
• Speak directly with clients when needed to understand business goals.
• Translate business needs into structured technical solutions.
• Provide feedback to improve internal platforms and processes.

Requirements

PHP & Architecture

• Advanced PHP with strong OOP practices.
• Experience building modular WordPress using plugin based architecture.
• Comfortable designing scalable architectures under ambiguity.
• Strong understanding of separation of concerns.

WordPress Mastery

• Deep knowledge of:
  • CPT & taxonomy modeling
  • Hooks & filters
  • REST API customization
  • ACF in complex environments
  • Multilingual builds
  • Experience in Gutenberg via React.js is a bonus
• Experience performing technical audits of legacy WordPress systems.
• Experience planning and executing large-scale content migrations.

Performance & Debugging

• Strong debugging skills in production environments.
• Query optimization experience.
• Asset performance awareness.
• Able to isolate and resolve complex issues quickly.

Project & Business Awareness

• Comfortable validating scope against estimates.
• Able to identify financial risk in technical decisions.
• Experience working with PMs to protect timeline and scope.
• Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
